Note: This song is about Kraidet Luelert, also known as Kasalong (or Gasalong as I’ve been spelling it), a Thai political refugee who was hunted down in Laos and assassinated in December 2018 for being an antimonarchist. The prime suspect is King Vajiralongkorn, who is said to have ordered the killing.

Note: This song was written by Nga Carawan, but in this video is covered by Add Carabao. Both are royalists today so that they once sang this is really interesting. The song was written by Nga Carawan right after the Thammasat University massacre of students protesters in 1976, which caused many of the protesters, including Nga to flee to the jungle and join the Communists. So this is a song calling for an armed communist revolution. This site does not promote violence (or communism). But the historical fact is that many of today’s older prodemocracy activists in their 60s or 70s were once communists and this history is important for the development of the Thai prodemocracy movement. You also must also check out Nga Carawan’s beautiful song “คืนรัง” “Return to the Nest” thanking the government for offering amnesty to the Thai Communists and inviting them back home. *”ศักดินา” “sakdina” is a hierarchical social system from Thai history that assigns different numerical ranks of prestige to everyone, especially nobility. So the word could also be translated as “elites” rather then “feudalism.” In Thai protest songs, it is used to criticize the hierarchical social system with the monarchy at the top.

Thai student protest leader Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak was just arrested (Fri 15 Aug. 4.30 pm). As he got into the police car, he said “Long live democracy. Dictators go to hell!” Here is a Suphan rap he did at a protest recently. It sounds like he is commenting on his own arrest in advance. (The story Penguin references, of the heir to the Red Bull fortune, who ran into and killed a policeman in 2012 and was never brought to justice, is HERE.)

Note: This song, posted June 16, 2020, is no doubt a reaction to the assassination of Wanchalearm Satsaksit, a Thai political refugee disappeared from Cambodia on June 4, 2020. His abduction in a city in broad daylight was witnessed by many, including his sister, who he was talking to on the phone at the time. The last words she recognized from him were, “I can’t breathe.” Sources told reporter Andrew MacGregor Marshall that King Vajiralongkorn ordered the killing in order to scare the activists protesting against him in Germany, although Wanchalearm had nothing to do with those protests. The palace had no comment. This 9th recent assassination of a Thai political refugee in a country neighboring Thailand, on top of the 8 similar cases that preceeded it, not to mention the threatened assassination of Faiyen band members who finally managed to flee to France, was the spark that caused the students to finally come out in flashmobs throughout Thailand, demanding an end to the dictatorship and harrassment and a new constitution.

This song sets out the dominant theory of how King Ananda was killed on June 9, 1946: that he was accidentally shot by his brother Bhumibol while the two teenagers were playing with guns. The three scapegoats mentioned in the song are the three men who were executed for regicide after very irregular trials–Thai royal secretary Chaliew Pathumros and royal pages Butr Patamasarin and Chit Singhasen. Enemies of Pridi Banomyong also tried to implicate the famous politician and statesman in the imagined conspiracy to kill the king.

*The Thai saying for “kill two birds with one stone” is “ยิงปืนนัดเดียว ได้นกสองตัว” or “Shoot one bullet, get two birds.” So the meaning of the last few lines is “Kill three [scape]goats with one stone. And Pridi [Banomyong] too!”

This song was sung by hundreds of protesters (maybe a thousand?) running in circles around Democracy Monument in Bangkok on July 26, 2020. This is originally a Japanese song that already had a Thai version. The original song seems to be about a little anime Hamster. Very few words were changed from the original Thai version to make this spoof (so don’t expect it to make a lot of sense). You can see video from the protest below.

*”Trundle” is a very rare word in English, which means to move along heavily with difficulty. However, it works perfectly for a hamster, which is an animal that seems to “trundle” along.

This is an audaious spoof of the Thai National Anthem, made by Khoontong Faiyen for the Pixelhelper protests in Germany. “German version” refers to the fact that the current King of Thailand rules from Germany. Lyrics of the English version of the spoof (which is not yet on YouTube). The official English version is almost a direct translation of the Thai version, so I won’t translate the Thai version:

“เพลงชาติไทย” “Thai National Anthem” (formerly เพลงชาติสยาม “Siam National Anthem”) has its origin in the Siam Revolution of 1932, and so it is appropriate to catalogue it here at Music of Thai Freedom. The melody is by Phra Chenduriyang (Peter Feit), whose father was a German-American immigrant to Thailand and mother was Mon-Thai. He lived his entire life in Thailand and identified as 100% Thai. The lyrics of เพลงชาติสยาม “Siam National Anthem” were written by Sanga Kanchanakphan aka Khun Wichitmatra. They are very similar to the current lyrics. When the name of the country was changed from Siam to Thailand in 1939, a contest was held to write new lyrics, and Luang Saranupraphan won the contest. [Researched using Wikipedia]

ประเทศไทยรวมเลือดเนื้อชาติเชื้อไทย
Thailand brings together the flesh and blood of the Thai people

Interestingly เพลงชาติไทย “Thai National Anthem” is considered only one half of the Thai national anthem, the other half being the Royal Anthem, titled สรรเสริญพระบารมี or “Glorify His Prestige.” The song สรรเสริญพระบารมี or “Glorify His Prestige” used to BE the National Anthem from 1888 to 1932.
