(Gasat Heng Bprachatipbadtai) Kings of Democracy

Lyrics and Melody by แอ๊ด คาราบาว Add Carabao
The YouTube was posted recently, October 29, 16 days after King Bhumipol’s death. I don’t know if it is an old song reposted, but I don’t recognize it, so it may be new.

Note: From reading this blog, Music of Thai Freedom, you may get the idea that most progressive Thais who want democracy are fighting against the King. This is not at all true. There is a cult surrounding King Bhumbol, which is exactly like a religion. Exactly as a Christian who is also a humanitarian picks verses to support their humanitarian values, some Thais read history to show that the kings “gave” Thais democracy. (The 7th King in 1932 was confronted with an accomplished revolution and so “agreed” to a constitutional democracy. See National Day Song “June 24” for more about this event.) Still, the emphasis of this new[?] Add Carabao song is on democracy as the the way forward. If it was written immediately after King Bhumipol’s death, this is interesting. I think the message is, “You’re on your own people. You can’t look to the King to save you. It’s up to us.”

From the 7th reign until King Bhumbol Adjulyadej
Thailand has been a country ruled by democracy
With moral authority, intelligence, in great royal grace, [the king]
bestowed sovereign power to the Thai people to have Parliament

[The 7th King of Thailand] holds a Royal Speech, abandoning power for the Thai people
For the masses of the general population. [He?] finds [he?] can bestow whatever faculty
Especially use of full power and authority. [One] can’t disobey the majority.
Deciding to oppose democracy would likely cause the Thai nation to split apart

Democracy that has a great king to remain as chief of state
Is a system that brings happy contentment and unity to brothers and sisters in all of Thailand
Must administer by Parliament, adhering to the voice of the majority.
Opinions can be different, but Thais must not be divided

Is a system that brings happy contentment and unity to brothers and sisters in all of Thailand
Must administrate by Parliament, adhering to the voice of the majority.
[He] renounced that power for who? Thai people bow and must be loyal

The pathway of Parliament will naturally take us to be a great nation
Thailand will have worldwide acceptance; have law and order.
All the people learn to coexist, to come together to create, to jointly develop

The pathway of Parliament is the desire of Thai people
