Itchy Butt

By Yan Marchal ยัน มาร์ฉัล, posted to YouTube July 29, 2019

This is a rare Thai protest song written and performed by a non-Thai! However Yan Marchal is a long-time resident of Thailand. It is the bad tempered, thin-skinned Prayut Chan-o-cha, illegitimate Prime Minister of Thailand, he is making fun of. Dictator Prayut held onto his self-appointed Prime Minister role by means of a sham election, but now the coup leader has to actually defend himself and his policies in Parliment instead of just barking orders. Given that Prayut’s head explodes when people challenge him, his interactions with members of Parliment have been entertaining to watch!

Love Notice from Prison

By ทอม ดันดี Tom Dundee

This is Tom Dundee’s awesome new song. He wrote to honor his wife who stuck by him through his 5 and a half years of his unjust imprisonment for lese majesty.

Living in prison for so many long years
Oh my dear, I am dying
I miss our children, wishing to cuddle them
I miss you my sweetheart!
How I pity myself!

I am so miserable!
Oh my sweetheart, struggling
to take my mom and children to visit me
Preparing food and things beforehand
My beloved, I so admire you!

On this difficult path, shivering cold in the rain
Oh sweetheart, my greatest lover, wonderful person
Your heart remains honest and unchanged
Coming to visit me every day like this!
Let me praise my honorable wife!

However much longer I must wait,
hurtling toward death, I guess it’s true,
ain’t it, that time proves the person
You see? Distance proves the horse
I’m convinced now, darling, you love me for real!

Since I was a child until now , there are always many questions
Why are poor people poor until death?
Why does speaking the truth put one at risk?
A diverse society, but everyone is running around like buffalos
How come people who are prominent must surrender to rich people who bring out money to show
While they brag on about their ranks, while at the same time some people live in hunger?
How come is doesn’t happen that good people get to be on top
but instead must serve selfish bosses?
Why do ordinary people have no rights and no voice?
If they come out and show themselves, they will necessarily be stretched across a whipping board
Why when children argue [someone] must say “Didn’t your mother and father teach you [anything]?”
They just don’t to listen either, and without any qualms about it
Why do teachers teach children to memorize rather than understand
When a critical time has been reached [when push comes to shove], they just make shit up
Why as soon as they see a police checkpoint, they must evade it,
It’s not hard to follow the rules
Or is it because that group plays dirty?
Whatever stuff they plant on us, we are stricken with fear at being framed
Why do the laws force us to do accordingly?
even though the one who makes the rules still needs to try [to do it]
As soon as they have a little power, they are talking like they own the world
They haven’t had time yet to be effective, and already they are corrupt

Because this world isn’t something that is working well
“Being a good person” isn’t an answer.
Real life, isn’t a test question
That you can answer randomly and still always pass

Repaze:
The world Is distorted. It fucking stinks like pee
Because I’ve been beaten by the system of ruthless people
Using power for evading the matters that your group does regularly
Taking away freedoms of people in the country
Pressuring [them] into imagining the country is prospering
But [as for] the prominent people within [the country], anyway, why do you turn and look away?
You still going on cheating each other being doomed together throughout half the country
(Why)
And why do we all not have something to eat? (Why?)
But why to you all still sit and drink (Wine)*
F u c k y o u Ok that’s right
I feel like I want to say “Fuck you. Ok, that’s right!
I have thoughts in my heart that I want to say, but I must keep them inside. If I didn’t, your head would fall off.
Lately there have been lots of matters about you that you forbid us to dig into to; [we] should stop rambling before [we] are in trouble.
I just don’t understand why is it is like this. My country boosts the rich people, and it’s strange.
Andy
If you don’t have money, it will be that you were caught sending [it] [to] territory C. How about all you go instead, like a plaything of Andy.
You big people, the grown people never see someone not thirsty. And so we all must come be rebels first before the country
disappears. You tell me to love the country. Have you people ever loved it? Where is the meaning? The meaning disappears.
It’s good as it melts away

Bridge

What must [we] do so that our homeland will prosper?
Because what we see today, the important people, damn it, turn away
There is a lot of money they all grab it until they are having a good time
I don’t understand it

Repaze
And you want to turn away, but you are welcome to do something. If you want to congregate, you are welcome to do that your heart’s content
I will ridicule, damn it! The wealth of the country, [I?] will burn. I will cheat, not letting there be any less or any more

Everyone, damn it, is so selfish!
They love themselves and are afraid to die. And so must pretend to be stupid
I see those assholes consuming everything, making the country dark and gloomy
But if one is intimidated, one will be scared

Repaze
Your group needs to be afraid because my group has power. For my group, you have the worth of a parasite
If you defy me, it won’t be hard for me to shoot you. Because you guys can have only this much value, just slaves.

*The English word “Why” and the Thai word “Wine” are pronounced the same. So there is a pun between this line and the line above.

#SaveFaiyen: Rishadan Port (or Port Faiyen) talks about his approach to writing protest music

Port Faiyen

Translation of a Facebook post by Rishadan Port on 7/25/2019

If you’ve noticed in the past years I don’t write songs that make fun of or attack that class of people who see things differently. I don’t even do it sometimes. This isn’t like the period when I just started writing songs, which I believe had a little bit of this, but anyway . . . (I’m speaking for myself; as for the other people in the band, that’s another story). And so I emphasize attacking specific persons who have power in the upper class only, for instance the monarchy or the junta.

As for my own songs, the focus will be more on creating a feeling of participation and I won’t blame the large set of people who see things differently because I want them to be willing to feel they are joining somewhat in the opposition to the dictatorship and the monarchy. Even if this is hard. Because if I attack a class of people, the opportunity to get them to see things my way becomes more and more difficult. Because I’d be setting them up to be enemies. Even if they really are my enemies, it’s probably only because of those people who have state power, who control the system and the various mechanisms of the state. As in the song, “พิษรัฐประหาร” (“Coup Poison”), I totally don’t write that those who call for the coup or support the coup are [expletive] evil, blah, blah, blah . . . But I will write totally attacking the junta, saying “How have you been planning this out together? After this coup, what damages will society suffer?” I want people to listen and get the picture. And I want to quietly persuade people who were misled to return to the path they should be on, with this section:

“For many years now, we see only deterioration. The people must be bruised and broken. Not excluding even the people who permitted Thailand be impoverished. The junta is rich. The people behind it even more extremely rich. The unlucky people are the citizens.”

The people who previously blessed something can stop giving it their blessing. In that period, many people who had invited the National Council for Peace and Order then turned around and really scolded them. I didn’t make this matter rise up myself [?] Or in the song “.. . . Lucky to Have the Thai People”) I point out, for people to see, what sorts of bad things former King Bhumbol did throughout his 70 year reign, which Thai people generally might not know. Or they might know but not be allowed to say it in a song. After his death, there was only one kind of song, the songs blessing him. And so it was necessary for me to write a song that brings up some other part of the truth, so that it would be recorded in the history of that group of songs. In my songs, I don’t blame the royalists who think differently but I write so they will be able to see the evil of the king and monarchy. But if they see, I ask that they stop loving the king and instead turn to loving the people who have been oppressed by the king. I myself have been oppressed. I have been forced to love. That you express your love for the king, is it because you really love the king or because you don’t have the choice to expresses yourself in any other way?

“The monarchy regime ruins all the Thai people. We love the king or, in truth, we love ourselves?
The monarchy regime ruins all the Thai people. Stop loving the king and turn to loving the people”

Whether in posting or tweeting every day, I try to avoid this thing. At most I criticize and set up questions to cause a realization. If [they] still can’t think, let it go. I understand things like this aren’t easy and must take time. Have people think and learn together some more. Our voices are just a small sound, while the voices of those in power are loud because they the news and lessons 24 hours a day from one’s birth to one’s death are totally under their control. They use even the law and dark power to shut the mouths of the people.

How long will it be . . . that people still suffer?
How long will it be . . . before we break free
from the torture we must tolerate?
There must be one time that we’ll finally pay attention to people so as to avoid it

Under the influence of a demon and his master lackeys
Full of power with the methods of a coward
Setting oneself above the law so one can issue orders easily
Whoever rises up to challenge, if they don’t die they must be jailed and menaced

Spoken:
You will push down on the heads of people like us [expecting we will] go where?
You thinks the people are stupid, not knowing [what] you people [are about]?
We’ve endured this long enough! We’ve endured so much. Enough!
Now people like us will rise up and fight!
In order to demand our rights and our power be restored
From the evil clutches of you guys

Rise up and demand our rights be restored!
Don’t let them rape [us], standing [there] brazenly anymore
Overthrow from the throne the one that murders and fleeces the people
Return power to all the people, to all the free [people]

This is the sound of all the people who have awakened and know their own selves
We refuse to surrender to the evil demon of the people
Fighting to the last, we refuse to lose
In the end, even if we have to die, there are no regrets if we die for freedom

(*refrain)

How long will it be . . . that people still suffer?
How long will it be . . . before we break free?
It’s been long enough already . . . that people have been willing to suffer
It’s been long enough already . . . . Now we must break free
How long will it be . . . that people still suffer?
It’s been long enough already . . . Now we must break free

(*refrain)

Rise up and demand our rights be restored!
Don’t let them rape [us], standing [there] brazenly anymore
Overthrow from the bloody throne the one that murders and fleeces the people
Return power to all the people, all the free [people].

New Death Threat against Faiyen Band, July 7, 2019

The entire death threat:
Pictures 1 and 2

Person threatening: This is a warning. If you do not surrender, you will be captured and killed immediately. Our unit has already reached your group’s location. At this moment, we have sent a special task force unit to monitor [your movement] every day. If you do not surrender, our unit will capture you and kill you immediately. We come to negotiate, because we have sent a special professional task force to monitor you. If you think you can escape, escape. If you escape tonight or tomorrow, we will kill you at the site. Because you are a threat to the national security. If you want to survive, we will negotiate with the authority (…) to arrest you for illegally entry and will process with a document to return you to Thailand. Tonight, we are ready to negotiate. We will send you the appointment later.

Picture 3
Yammy Faiyen:
Are you a soldier or murderer?
Think for yourself, you can choose who you will be.
We did nothing to you.
Please let us go.
Please let time solve the problem by itself.

Pictures 4 and 5.
Person threatening: It’s unnecessary. I already told you I come to negotiate. If you want peace, come out and negotiate and you will know who I am. Whether I am a murderer or a soldier you will surely be captured because our unit was searching for you in Laos before we could get a clue of where you were and get a green light to capture and kill you. If you don’t want to die, this evening the village police will go to capture you for illegal entry.
You have three choices.
First, send someone to negotiate with us.
Second, die without a clue of who did it.
Third, be arrested for illegally entering the country.
We have a green light.

My Dreams

By Rishadan Port

Port Faiyen is a refugee currently trying to get to a third country. Eight associates or former associates of Faiyen band members have been disappeared and were definitely assassinated (2 persons) or probably assassinated (6 persons) in just the past three 3 years. The violence has escalated since December 2018, and the Faiyen band was recently warned by a high-level international agency that they would be assassinated on May 22, 2018. SEE THE ABC NEWS ARTICLE. A #SaveFaiyen campaign successfully put the spotlight on the band and the “D-Day” came and went. The band is still alive and racing the clock to get to a third country. Facing possible assassination and contemplating his life, Port Faiyen reposted this song.

I have many dreams
However big, it’s not enough
I want to see, to be, to get, and it’s never enough
Don’t tell me to live sufficiently

I have dreams, that’s true
But if I get them or not, it’s not important
If I get them, it’s good. If not, oh well, forget it!
I just want to sing a song for you to listen to

All of us, each person, has dreams, which are a motivation
Whether big dreams, medium-sized dreams, or tiny, little dreams
All similarly, each individually, we must struggle, must wait
For one day that the dreams will finally be true

Freedom, equality, riches
A beautiful wife, a rich husband, not destitute
To have rights, protection, dignity, humanity
Or to free oneself from the world and move towards nirvana

Even if my dreams must finish and pass away, just disappointments
I wish [you all] to be caught up in dreams continually, not stopping
As for myself, if I get them, great; if not, oh well, forget it!
I just want to sing a song for you to listen to
I just want to sing a song for you to listen to
We will probably reach our own dreams one day

Help us #SaveFaiyen !

One of the reasons I started Music of Thai Freedom website was to make the band Faiyen visible to the world. I had hoped this would protect them from forced disappearances and assassinations. Now they hear that they will be killed by the same team that killed Surachai Saedan, Gasalong, and Puchana (as in the song “Who Killed Surachai?” at this site. And so we a #SaveFaiyen campaign was started to get them asylum in France BEFORE they are assassinated. In the picture below, Khoontong Faiyen helps Siam Teerawut learn his bass part. Siam Teerawut (or Khaoneow Mamuang) disappeared along with comrades who by the names Sanam Luang and Young Blood after reportedly being arrested in Vietnam for using fake passports to try to escape Laos, where they were being hunted. Khoontong and other members of the Faiyen band are still alive. UNHCR needs to send a team to Laos to get them out NOW!
