Rap Against Dicatorship dropped a viral video of their song “Pratet Gu Mee” or “What My Country’s Got” that received rave reviews and respect from international media. Their follow-up song describes how the junta rigged Thai general election in advance to almost guarantee a victory for the current junta leader, Dictator Prayut Chan-o-cha. Specifically, according to the junt-written Constitution, 250 senators, all appointed by the junta, will help choose the prime minister. Thus the current Dictators got a 250 seat headstart in the contest on March 24, 2019. His party needs to only win 126 out of 500 seats in the lower house to get to choose the Prime Minister. * This is a joke that if they say too much they could be strangled or hung. **Literally, “I want to kick you in the mouth.” But sounds a little too serious, so for English we changed to “Oh I want to strangle you!” which is a thing people often say in English without meaning it seriously. ***The word ข้า, pronounced kâa, can mean “I” or “slave,” and the reason it was chosen here rather than other words for “I” is probably because of the word “ค่า,” also pronounced kâa but meaning “value” two lines on. ****As opposed to being unified, as the junta would like them to be–all on the same side backing the junta. *****The letter “ว” pronounced “waw-waen” with “waw” being the sound of the “w” and “waen” meaning “ring” being the prototypical example of a word using the letter “w”. (Parallel to if in English our letter “b” was pronounced “Bee-Ball.” So the letter “ว” or “waw-waen” or “w” is probably a reference to the Deputy Dictator Prawit Wongsuwan’s ring and watches scandal. I can also think of other things that start with “ว.” ******The words for “spa” and “assembly” are so similar in Thai that an English-only speaker probably couldn’t distinguish them. They both sound like “spa.” Also, it is a already a joke to call the National Assembly a Spa, implying that the legislators aren’t working very hard there.

As one group of people who bravely challenge the dictatorship in order to overthrow the parasites sucking the strength from the people, I give you the band Faiyen, a team who had to flee together to a country neighboring Thailand just after the coup in 2014.
They all chose to leave Thailand in order to work, presenting their art, songs, thoughts, and criticism in an area that “one would think” would be safer than in Thailand.
But it didn’t turn out to be all that safe, and those people were very courageous to continue working in an atmosphere of constant fear and apprehension, never quitting the fight.
These guys produce music of social criticism that is current, clear, and to the point, a body of work which now amounts to many tens of songs
These guys continuously make programs using various social media platforms, almost every day.
These people eat poorly and insufficiently, but never grumble because their life isn’t for eating; it’s for changing Thailand.
These many people are part of a campaign, a movement for democracy which had been going on in Thailand for a very long time before it was decided to take it outside the country.
Right now, all of them are at risk of being kidnapped and disappeared, just like their many refugee friends and comrades wanted for [the “crime” of] lese majesty, as wiping them out at all levels is the aim of the military dictatorship.
Right now they will probably need to devote quiet a bit of resources to finance the problem of their safety.
These people resisting the coup are a group of individuals who I greatly respect and believe in.
If you, brothers and sisters, would like to do a good deed at this time, please consider the band Faiyen and your brothers and sisters who are at risk of being wiped out in a neighboring country [to Thailand], and they would thank you so much.

This is a spoof of the Song “Fortune Cookie” by the the Thai idol singing group BNK48 (and the Japanese idol group AKB48 before that). It is a song that is currently very popular and fun to dance to and has several spoofs, including one other song here at Music of Thai Freedom: 112 Royal Pizza. The singer, Yoshi 300 is saying that by poking fun of the Dictator, General Prayut Chan-ocha, in a spoof song, he risks going to jail. Among 30-some other countries, Thailand was named and shamed this week by the UN for carrying out reprisals against human rights advocates. According to the Thai newspaper The Nation, “The means cited range from murder and torture to arbitrary arrest, surveillance and campaigns to ‘criminalise’ or publicly stigmatise the targeted individuals.” A second reason this song had to be translated is that recently Prayut, in an attempt to appear cool and youthful, invited the Japanese group AKB48 to come sing and dance for him. In fact, he looked very silly waving his glow stick to the music.

*He is referring the the Orwellian “attitude adjustment” sessions of the junta. They literally call people who criticize the dictatorship in for “attitude adjustment” and they are taken to a military facility where they are detained for a few days or even a week or more, and they are questioned and sometimes even tortured. Sometimes they go “voluntarily” and sometimes they are dragged there.

Everyone is wishing Somsak Jeamteerasakul well after an illness, and it seemed a good time to post a translation of an old song written in tribute to him by Rishadan Port and Erosagape. The song was inspired by an incident in 2012: Professor Somsak had posted on facebook “How can royalists prove that the king [Bhumipol] works hard?” Dr. Tul and others then came to Thammasat University and told Somsak how the king works hard, and Dr Tul asked, “What did the king do to Somsak to cause him to hate the king?” Professor Somsak answered, “Repeal the lese majesty law and I will tell you what the king has done.”

The Salim are multicolored in that they claim they are neither Red or Yellow (the two sides of Thailand’s political divide), but they still seem to always side with Yellow. *****This word “อุดมการณ์” or “ideology” has a positive connotation in Thai. A Thai person “holds fast to their ideology” in contrast abandoning their beliefs for convenience.
From the band Faiyen, this song pretends to be an “original fan song” for Mewnich BNK48, one of the young women in the very popular idol group BNK48.
Note: One of the young women in the popular idol group BNK48, is named “Mewnich.” Of course, Munich, in Germany, is also where notorious billionaire playboy King Vajiralongkorn prefers to live his hedonistic life. He even demanded a change to Thailand’s brand new junta-written Constitution so that he could rule from afar. King Vajiralongkorn is taking Thailand back towards absolute monarchy just so he can more easily indulge in various creepy behaviors in Germany, and evade his responsibility in Thailand, which is to at least show up and play king. But he wants fabulous treasure with no strings attached. (Wouldn’t we all?) If there is any chance you don’t know what I am talking about, google “King Vajiralongkorn”, read the articles, and look at the pictures.

Note: An arial photo of a housing development being built within Doi Suthep National Park caused public outrage. Not only does it scar a forest that is supposedly being preserved, but the houses were being built for judges to live in for free. This highlights that the legal and political system is rigged in favor of the rich. Compare this to 15-year sentence for illegal logging received by a poor couple picking mushrooms in a national forest (they got out after 17 months) or the disappearance (and likely assasination) of community activist Billy Polachan after being arrested for stealing honeycomb in a National Park.The photo sparked protests that were actually successful! The building was halted and protesters are demanding that the land be returned to the wild. Notice the appeal to the royal authority. Not all Thai activists are anti-monarchy.

Note is CREDIT Andrew MacGregor Marshall: “Bangkok resident Yan Marchal has been forced to delete a viral video mocking the Thai junta, after being visited by police.
They made him sign a form admitting that he made a “mockery clip” and saying that he is now “repenting for the bad action and will not do it again”. The form also says he “would like to say sorry to the government and people of Thailand”.
The video he posted can be viewed here. It changes the lyrics of a junta anthem to criticise the dishonesty and corruption of the government. It contains no illegal statements, and there was no justification for police becoming involved.
The video went viral, getting more than a million views in just a few days.
Thai dictator Prayut Chan-ocha claims that Thailand is now a democracy after elections held in March.
But in a democracy, people have the right to mock their leaders without being visited by police.
It’s pathetic that the junta is so afraid of some inoffensive mockery that they send police to deal with it. Democracy remains far distant in Thailand.”
